Howdy,

Yo, ho, ho (Santa must be a sailor who hasn’t come out yet). 2010 may go down as the year of the sailor in the official log of the 97th. First came a reprise of our 2003 appearance at the Chicago Maritime Festival and then later in the year we did a couple of private, corporate performances as vagabond pirates.

We had a great time grinding our way up to Chicago in February. Yes the van made it. Yes it was very cold. But what kept us thoroughly amused and occasionally befuddled was the brand new GPS navigator that Craig had gotten for Christmas. The nagging little electronic voice finally shut up once Craig figured out that it had been set to avoid interstate routes.

Once in Chicago, it was a heartwarming display of team effort. Mad Dog was elected chauffeur for the duration of our stay since the driver’s door was blocked in the narrow parking space we were provided. Each time we returned to our accommodations an athletic performance of Olympic caliber was provided by MD as he capered over the engine housing and other assorted traps and deadfalls to get out of the van. Craig was given the post of navigator since he had slightly more flight time with the GPS than anyone else. Rick was assigned the role of dead weight and communication parrot. As Mad Dog raced through the icy Chicago streets, Craig would call out the landmarks and turnings to Rick who would relay them in a loud voice to MD who would repeat them back as confirmation. It was like being in our own WWII submarine movie.

The performances at the historical society were way cool. Equally enjoyable were the school programs, pizza party/poster signing session, the backstage antics and the wrap party in the icebound yacht club on Sunday afternoon. Some of our performances, past and present, can be found on YouTube. We just hope we don’t have to wait another seven years before we are invited back.
